The United States is facing what some might call a health care crisis. Today 47 million people in the United States are without health care insurance. This situation exists in a country that spends 16% or more of its gross domestic product (GDP) on health care. The national health care program in the United States represents a stark contrast to countries like Japan and Canada—which spend a smaller percentage of their GDP on health care costs while maintaining government subsidized funding of universal health care systems for their citizens.[1] These countries cover 100% of their citizens health care needs while spending a lesser percentage of their GDP on health care than the United States; which covers only 85% of its citizens health care needs.[2] The overwhelming cost of health care in the United States—as well as projected cost increases to a total of 16.9% of the GDP by 2016—indicates that the United State’s current system is not working to control cost.[3] Government controlled systems or government administered systems, like the ones employed in Japan and Canada respectively, continue to suppress increases in health care costs while maintaining or increasing the life expectancies of their citizens.[4] Given the economic and health benefits demonstrated by government health care programs in Japan and Canada, the United States needs to investigate the adoption of a universal health care plan similar to those employed by Japan or Canada if it is to control the rising cost of health care while continuing to provide its citizens with acceptable levels of quality health care.
